Vegan ‘za at Gordo’s Pizza, YYC!

If I ever had to make the life-altering decision of choosing between eating pizza every day for the rest of my life or never again, I would obviously choose every day for the rest of my life.  If you guys know me at all, you would know that pizza parties are my favourite kind of parties and I make ‘za a lot. When I go out for pizza, my options are usually limited to either fancy thin crust places that might carry a vegan cheese option, or pizza delivery places where I order their only vegetarian pizza, sans cheese. While I love these options, sometimes I get jealous of those who are able to just order a pizza with nice thick crust, toppings that don’t fall off due to lack of binding, with strings of cheese pulling at every bite.

Gordo’s pizza may have just solved my first world problem for me. These guys have recently opened up in Calgary, just off of McKnight and Center Street at 4817 Center Street NW. I was so excited when I heard that they had vegan options, that I totally called them on pretty much their first night open which was last night. I was hanging out with my (vegetarian) mama and brother, and we decided to take advantage of their two for one deal, and try both of their vegan options- a Mediterranean ‘za (wilted spinach, tomatoes, and black olives)sans feta plus green olives, and a Garden of Eaten(mushrooms, onions, pineapple, green peppers, tomatoes, black olives)… Both with Daiya cheese!

For their first night of being open, they certainly didn’t take long to fill my order! Twenty minutes (okay, I showed up a little early because I get really stoked on pizza), and my pizzas were ready for pick up. In my few minutes of earliness, I got a chance to chat with the folks behind Gordo’s a little bit and they were some of the friendlier pizza slingers I’ve met in the city. I was informed that the Daiya option is usually an extra charge, but with their pricing and 2 for 1 option, that doesn’t much concern me at all.

When I got home, we stuffed our faces with za. Each pizza contained a myriad of vegetables, and both mozzarella and cheddar Daiya shreds. I prefer my Daiya bubbly and broiled, but I understand that pizza ovens are a different monster altogether, and still really enjoyed the melty Daiya on top of my za. The crust was soft and thick, with a perfectly crisp crust. This pizza made me seriously nostalgic for the days of my pre-vegan childhood where my family would order a greasy pizza from the only joint in town and settle down for a movie. Except for vegetables and vegan cheese aren’t greasy and won’t give you a heart attack, guys. And instead of settling down for a movie we clearly settled down for an episode of The X-Files which is the same thing I do every night.

If you’re looking for this spot, keep your eyes peeled on Center Street as it’s located in a little strip of businesses and right now the signage can be easy to miss!  It will be totally worth the quest though, and I love how accessible this area is from the NW and downtown especially! The NE too probably actually.

I am super stoked to visit Gordo’s again in the near future and I can tell that it’s going to be my pizza take out BFF.

  1. Wow – those look great!

  2. Have you tried the Avatara’s or Framosa’s vegan pizza it would be an interesting comparison.

I have tried all three. Gordo’s is my favourite to pick up and bring home. Makes me very nostalgic. Famoso is awesome as well! I don’t eat it as much in Calgary because I can get it most anywhere, but it is a delicious and reliable bet! Love the primavera with daiya, and sharing some olives at dinner at Famoso!

With all due respect, I really am not a fan of Avatara at all. Despite having lived a block away from it, trying it once was enough for me. Not a fan of the crust, and they don’t cook the Daiya well in my humble opinion! I like my pizza to taste like pizza and not health food. 🙂

      1. Thank you very much for the insight! I am huge fan of just Cheeseless Pizza anyways. What are your thoughts on the Gratitude Cafe. I have been there but the Staff doesn’t seem so Grateful. Just holding out Hope the Coup Reno’s go quick and smooth
